The Ultimate West Coast Adventure (With Zero Boring Bits)

So, you’re keen to leg it from Perth to Exmouth? Good choice, legend. Western Australia’s coast is like one big postcard – but wilder, weirder, and way more fun in a campervan. Forget the tour buses, overpriced flights, and bad hostel bunkmates. This is YOUR road trip. Here’s how to send it from Perth to Exmouth like a true road warrior.

Day 1: Perth to Lancelin

Load up the van, blast some questionable tunes, and hit the highway North. First stop? Lancelin. Think epic sand dunes, turquoise water and sunsets that’ll make your ex jealous on Insta. Chill on the beach, grab some fish & chips and park up at a local campsite.

Day 2: Lancelin to Geraldton

Next, cruise through the freaky-cool Pinnacles Desert (yes, you can drive to the viewing areas – no dune-bashing, cowboy). Snap a few pics, contemplate life and then head to Geraldton. Beach town vibes, cheap eats and some solid seaside camping. Grab a beer and watch the kite surfers show off.

Day 3: Geraldton to Kalbarri

Time to get wild at Kalbarri National Park. Park up and hike into Nature’s Window for killer views. Feeling lazy? The coastal cliffs near town are just a short drive and full of drama (just like your last situationship). Camp up at a nearby holiday park and kick back.

Day 4: Kalbarri to Shark Bay / Denham

Northbound to Shark Bay, where the water’s clearer than your intentions after a few drinks. Say hi to the stromatolites at Hamelin Pool (Google it, they’re older than dinosaurs) and chill in Denham. Optional: swing by Shell Beach – yep, it’s 100% made of shells. Weird flex, but cool.

Nerdy tip: Visit the Shark Bay Interpretive Centre in Denham and learn about the area's history and wildlife.

Day 5: Monkey Mia to Carnarvon

Meet the famous dolphins at Monkey Mia, but don’t try to outswim them (they’re locals, you’ll lose). Then push on to Carnarvon, land of fresh fruit and quirky space museums. Stock up on mangoes and roadside weirdness, then park up for the night.

Day 6: Carnarvon to Coral Bay

Coral Bay = paradise. Get your snorkel game on at the Ningaloo Reef, just metres from the shore. No boats, no worries – just coral, turtles and fish judging your underwater skills. Stay in Coral Bay and fall asleep salty and sunburnt (but in a good way).

Day 7: Coral Bay to Exmouth

Final leg! Roll into Exmouth, gateway to more Ningaloo goodness. Spot whale sharks (seasonal, but worth the hype), hike Cape Range National Park and finish your trip feeling like the king of the West Coast.

Bonus Tips for This Trip:
  • Don’t drive on the beach – save the dune bashing antics for your mate’s 4WD.
  • Book campsites ahead, especially in Coral Bay and Exmouth – this ain’t the South of France!
  • Book your “swimming with Whales sharks” trip in advance, it does book out quickly!
  • Fuel up often – West Coast distances are no joke.
  • BYO vibe – we supply the van, but you bring the vibes.
Ready to Go?

Snag a campervan in Perth and hit the road to Exmouth before someone else takes all the best campsites.

This ain’t your average “gap year” itinerary – it’s a one-way ticket to freedom, fried snacks and questionable life choices.
